Our Mission

To provide sight saving eye screening to children in underserved communities in order to detect vision defects and where

needed provide spectacles to these children in order to improve their day-to-day quality of life.

Did You Know?

Twenty per cent of children aged four years old have undetected refractive problems which may lead to Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye – an early childhood condition where a child’s eyesight in one eye does not develop as it should. It can be caused by various factors, including far-sightedness, muscle imbalance, or eye injury.

A child with lazy eye will not be able to focus properly with one of their eyes, however the other eye will make up for the problem, so much so that the affected eye suffers as a result.

The eye with impaired vision (amblyopia) will not receive clear images; the brain won’t receive clear data, and will eventually start to ignore it.  In severe cases this can lead to complete blindness in the affected eye.

Early detection, preferably before the age of 6/7 is therefore essential.

How Does Bonani Help?

20181011_083744

Bonani provides FREE screening at schools for children in the foundation phase with the aim of detecting refractive errors before they lead to permanent damage.

Bonani books screening days at under-served schools where a simple vision screening test is conducted. The screening is conducted using the plusoptiX Autorefractor Screening Device to provide accurate vision screening in just a few seconds. The test is completely non-invasive.  All that is required is for the child to look at the ‘face’ on the machine for a few seconds which is long enough for the reading to be taken.

The reading gives a simple ‘pass’ or ‘refer’ result. A ‘pass’ indicates there are no refractive errors whilst a ‘refer’ means that some degree of refractive error has been detected. Children with a ‘refer’ result will need further examination by a professional eye specialist.

Following further examination, should spectacles be required, Bonani will provide the child with a pair of spectacles.

More serious cases requiring more specialised or ongoing care will be sent to government clinics/facilities with a detailed referral and report from Bonani.

Bonani Foundation Plusoptix vision screening

Bonani is powered by Plusoptix.  This is an easy-to-use, non-invasive, accurate screening solution that can be used to assess visual disorders in children as young as 6 months.  The test takes just a few seconds and has been proven to achieve a sensitivity of 89%.  The result is given as a simple pass or refer, with the latter result indicating that a comprehensive eye examination by a paediatric ophthalmologist may be necessary.  The speed, effectiveness and efficacy of the Plustoptix device has made screening large numbers of children possible.
